Harvesting remote data from stationary equipment (Telemetry - Remote data collection)
> Background
Stationary equipment is used in many different environments for data collection (level sensors, control function indicators, usage statistics) and to control other equipment (eg. telemonitoring, remote control of toll barriers).
This equipment is sometimes located outside or away form the company's local network, so it is important to be able to connect them using wireless networks.
> Example: data collection on an industrial site
An industrial site remote monitoring system provides complete real time equipment administration (eg. data feedback, remote control, reconfiguration of alarm thresholds). The IT system is automatically informed of technical breakdowns and remedial action is therefore more reactive. This enables the operator to improve the productivity of their production tool and ensure better quality control.
> Example: telemonitoring of sensitive sites
The manager of a telemonitoring company installs advanced alert detection systems which trigger the appropriate alarms in critical situations or break-ins. The sequence of events is date stamped, pre-recorded locally and sent back to the server centre for analysis. The quality of information sent back to the final customer is assessed.
